While hard work absolutely has its place, the reality is that the best conditioning programmes aren’t built around doing everything at maximum effort. They’re built around balance.
At MSC, our Met Con programme is designed around this principle. Rather than chasing exhaustion every session, we aim to develop all of the energy systems that contribute to long-term fitness, health and performance.
Understanding Your Energy Systems
Your body doesn’t have a single “fitness engine.” Instead, it has multiple energy systems that work together depending on the demands being placed upon it.
At one end of the spectrum is your aerobic system. This is responsible for producing energy over longer periods and lower intensities. It’s incredibly efficient and forms the foundation of almost every physical activity you perform.
At the other end is your anaerobic system, which provides energy for short bursts of high-intensity work when demand exceeds what the aerobic system can supply.
The mistake many people make is spending all of their conditioning time in the middle ground: hard enough to feel uncomfortable, but not structured enough to develop any particular system effectively.
The result? Plenty of fatigue but limited progress.
Why Aerobic Training Matters
The aerobic system is often overlooked because it doesn’t feel particularly glamorous.
You won’t collapse on the floor afterwards, and you probably won’t be posting screenshots of your heart rate to Instagram.
However, physiologically speaking, aerobic development may be the single most important factor in long-term conditioning success.
A stronger aerobic system improves the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to working muscles, increases recovery between efforts, improves recovery between training sessions and allows you to sustain higher outputs for longer periods.
Perhaps most importantly, it improves your ability to recover from high-intensity work.
In simple terms, the bigger your aerobic engine, the more work you can handle.
The Role of High-Intensity Training
Of course, conditioning can’t be all easy miles and steady efforts.
High-intensity intervals remain one of the most effective ways to improve cardiovascular fitness, increase VO₂ max and develop the ability to produce power under fatigue.
These sessions teach the body to tolerate and manage high workloads while challenging both the heart and lungs to operate at their upper limits.
Done correctly, they provide a powerful stimulus for adaptation.
Done too often, they simply leave you tired.
This is where balance becomes critical.
Don’t Forget Lactate Work
Sitting between aerobic work and all-out intensity is lactate training.
This is the uncomfortable zone where the body begins producing lactate faster than it can clear it.
Despite getting a bad reputation over the years, lactate itself isn’t the enemy. In fact, it’s an important fuel source and signalling molecule within the body.
Targeted lactate sessions help improve the body’s ability to buffer, clear and utilise lactate, allowing you to maintain higher intensities for longer before fatigue sets in.
The key word here is targeted.
Most people don’t need huge amounts of lactate training. A small dose goes a long way when it’s layered on top of a strong aerobic base and regular high-intensity work.

This is exactly why our Met Con sessions aren’t simply random workouts designed to leave you lying on the floor.
Across the week, we intentionally vary the stimulus.
Some sessions focus on developing aerobic capacity. Others target high-intensity output. Occasionally, we’ll introduce carefully planned lactate-focused work to challenge your ability to sustain harder efforts.
The result is a more complete conditioning programme that develops fitness from every angle.
You’ll recover better, perform better and continue progressing long after the novelty of “just going harder” wears off.
Because the goal isn’t simply to survive a workout.
The goal is to become fitter.
